Conditions such as declining mobility become common as dogs mature.
- Up to 80% of dogs over 8 years old are thought to suffer from osteoarthritis*
- Up to 52% of dogs suffering from osteoarthritis are also overweight or obese**
It can be difficult to detect declining mobility in some dogs, but it also varies from pet to pet and with respect to their relationship with you.
WHAT'S BEHIND MOBILITY DISORDERS?
Healthy Joint
Joints, or articulations, are the connection between bones that enable flexible movement. A liquid-based shock absorber called synovial fluid reduces the friction between articular cartilage of connected bones.
Dysfunctional Joint
With age, synovial fluid production in the body declines naturally. Decreased shock absorption ends up leading to bone friction and the cartilage covering bones deteriorates. This causes pain and swelling.
